Put simply this blog covers my journey to try and improve my health, to live life as fully as I can.
Over the last few months I have started to make changes to my lifestyle after being ill for quite a long time. My hope is that in sharing what I have done to get better and improve my well-being I will be able to help other people.
About 2 years ago I started to get a whole host of digestive problems, nausea, bloating, cramps etc. after 6 months I was trailed on a gluten free diet and then dairy free diet and tested for coeliacs (which I have recently been diagnosed with!). At this point I did start to feel a bit better, but I have never been quite right and my symptoms have come back time and time again. I have also been treated for IBS, but not matter how many different types of medication I took nothing seemed to have helped!
At the beginning of the year my step-mum got me Ella Woodward’s cook book in the hope that it might help me. This has kick started me to look into alternative ways to heal the body. I currently try to follow and gluten, dairy, meat and refined sugar free diet, or in other words a plant based wholefoods diet. I follow this diet the majority of the time, I won’t lie and say it is all the time, it has it’s challenges and at times I struggle, but I’m getting there and to be honest I do break the diet every now and again! I aim to eat this way 90% of the time, some weeks I have no problems and eat this way the whole week through and other weeks I don’t, but that’s alright!
To compliment this I have started to look at mindfulness and meditation, I am fully aware that stress has a huge effect on the body, but only recently have I taken notice of what it is doing to mine. I am currently using the headspace app to incorporate meditation into my everyday life!
The way I am living now, has honestly changed my life for the better, my symptoms have been greatly reduced and at times are non existent and I feel better in myself (something that I have been trying to do for a long time). It is one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Changing my lifestyle while has had a hugely positive effect on me and the people around me, it has been a struggle at times, it is hard to do something that is so against the norm and it takes effort which is damn hard when you’re ill! But I have learnt ways to make this easier, and I hope by sharing these other people might benefit as well.
So in the words of Art Williams “I’m not telling you it is going to be easy, I’m telling you it is going to be worth it!”
